Victoria High Country Trip Itinerary

Our trip will take us down the east coast and into the high country via Omeo. From there we will set bases for a few days at a time, allowing day trips to see the sights. We plan to return via Jindabyne (with a trip up Mt Kosciuszko for the Summit Walk), and Canberra, before traversing the inland route home via Parkes, Dubbo, Goondiwindi, and back to Brisbane.

Day 1 – Brisbane to Coffs Harbour

On Day 1 we plan on a leisurely departure from Brisbane to get to Coffs Harbour with about 5 hours on the road.

There might be an opportunity for a quick ride at Coffs Harbour with the Coffs Coast Mountain Bike Club.

Day 2 – Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Kiama

The second day will be a big day in the car and see us through Sydney and down to the South Coast of New South Wales. Stop in at Port Macquarie for morning tea, and lunch outside Newcastle. Our destination will be Kiama or Gerringong area.

Day 3 – Kiama to Bega

We’re into some really nice country now and we’ll take it easy for a day through the south coast of New South Wales. Vincentia or Hyams Beach on Jervis Bay for morning tea, then on down to Ulladulla, Mollymook, Bateman’s Bay, and Bega.

Day 4 – Bega to Omeo

Day 5 – Omeo to Bright

It’s a short hop across Mt Hotham from Omeo to Bright, so there’s plenty of time to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way.

Day 6 – 10 – Bright and Surrounds

We’ll base ourselves at Bright for a few days which will be a great place for day trips into various parts of the high country. The Visit Bright website has a lot of great information and resources.

Day 11 – Bright to Jindabyne

A travel day around to our second base at Jindabyne will see us skirt around the north western hills close to Albury, before heading back on the Alpine Way towards Mt Kosciuszko and Jindabyne.

Day 12 – Mount Kosciuszko Summit walk

The summit walk is a full day Grade 3 hike which starts at Charlotte Pass, which is about a 1 hour drive up the hill from Jindabyne. More details can be found on the NSW Parks website: https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/mount-kosciuszko-summit-walk. For those not walking, there is plenty to do and see for the day in the Perisher area. If we’re lucky, there might be an early snow fall in the village!

Day 13 – Jindabyne to Canberra

A short hop from Jindabyne over to Canberra should give us time to take a scenic route.

Day 14 – Canberra Sight Seeing

This will be an easy rest day before we hit the road for 2 days driving back to Brisbane. We’ll take the opportunity to visit the usual places.

Day 15 – Canberra to Dubbo

First big day back on the road back to Brisbane, but we’ll go via Parkes and see The Dish.
